The ALLIANCE National Parent Technical Assistance Center will be holding topical institutes for Parent Centers January 27-28, 2010 in Crystal City, VA. The two topics will be: 1) management and leadership and 2) children’s mental health and emotional behavior disorders. We look forward to seeing many of you soon!

IN*SOURCE staff member Wilner Cusic recently wrote an article about the school staff that helped her daughter Amber succeed in her special education program and become an independent adult. Professional development modules cover important topics such as Response to Intervention, progress monitoring, and differentiated instruction. Office of Disability Employment Policy Listening Tour

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) Assistant Secretary Kathy Martinez is leading a listening tour across the United States. ODEP and other federal partners are seeking input from people with disabilities, employers, and other stakeholders on key issues related to the under-employment of people with disabilities. Listening tour locations include Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Boston and events will take place January 21-March 3, 2010.  More>>>

Kennedy Foundation Public Policy Fellowship Program 2010-2011

The Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation is seeking exemplary professionals and family members of persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are currently working or volunteering in the field of inclusive services and supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for an intensive one-year Public Policy Fellowship in Washington, D.C. The Foundation anticipates up to three fellowships will be awarded for the period July, 2010-June 30, 2011. The Fellowship starting date will be negotiated with the successful applicant. The application deadline for 2010-2011 is March 5, 2010. More>>>

New Project Forum Document

Project Forum recently released a new publication, Early Childhood Mental Health Services: Four State Case Studies. This in-depth policy analysis provides a background of the early childhood mental health (ECMH) focus of many organizations and legal elements of why it is essential that children with disabilities be included in a comprehensive mental health system. Government Website Publishes Self-Advocacy Tips for Teens

Disability.gov has published a variety of self-advocacy resources for teens that help them begin to express their needs and wants by participating in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. These resources assist teens in learning ways to talk about their disability to others, setting goals, and practicing other self-advocacy skills. More>>>

Best Practices in Homeless Education

The Legal Center for Foster Care and Education and the National Center for Homeless Education have developed a guide on two federal laws related to the education of homeless students: The McKinney-Vento Act and the Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act. Clearing the Path to School Success for Students in Out-of-Home Care provides basic information about the two laws and practical strategies for their implementation. More>>>

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Resources

The Maternal & Child Health Library at Georgetown University has compiled a collection of Web sites and resources related to FASD into a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Research Brief.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a FASD “widget” which is a graphic organizations can place directly on their Web site to inform visitors about FASD and link them to current information.

CELL Practice Guide: Wired to Read

Wired to Read is a practice guide for parents that provides tips for how parents can use computers to help their preschool children learn language and literacy skills. The handout provides tips on selecting appropriate software programs and how parents can interact with their young children during the activity. More>>>
