TA&D Project of the Month: National Professional Development Center on Inclusion (NPDCI)


The National Professional Development Center on Inclusion (NPDCI) is a TA&D Network project located at the University of North Carolina’s FPG Child Development Institute and directed by Pam Winton. The project works with states to ensure that early childhood teachers are prepared to educate and care for young children with disabilities in settings with their typically developing peers. Recently, NPDCI coordinated with the Division of Early Childhood and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in the development of a joint position statement on inclusion. Summer Assistive Technology (AT) Online Institute


The free 2009 Online Summer Institute on Assistive & Instructional Technology sponsored by the Family Center on Technology and Disability (FCTD) takes place online July 20 – 31. Educators, parents, and AT professionals are invited to learn about “Use of Social Media Tools” and “Accessible Instructional Materials: National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) and Beyond.” Post your questions and comments throughout the institute; AT experts will moderate. Check in at least once a day to stay current with the information, discover successful strategies, and learn about useful resources. More>>> 

NBC Launches Disability Awareness Campaign


As part of their The More You Know campaign, NBC recently launched a disability public service announcement. The script was developed in collaboration with the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and features Meredith Vieira as spokesperson. More>>>

The Live Your Life Well Campaign


As part of May’s Mental Health Month, Mental Health America launched the Live Your Life Well campaign to provide practical research-based strategies that people can use to decrease stress and promote well-being. More>>>

CELL Practice Guides


Practice guides developed by the Center for Early Literacy Learning (CELL), an OSEP-funded TA&D project, provide tips for parents on engaging their young children in literacy experiences. The following is an excerpt from the Out and About practice for infants:

“Parents often take their babies along when they shop for food, visit relatives, attend older siblings' ball games, eat out, go to the library or book store, and do all sorts of other activities outside the home. Many of these activities provide opportunities for infants to become familiar with letters.” More>>>

Parent Training Programs Meta-Analysis


Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers recently conducted a literature review of current studies on parent training programs to indentify common components associated with better parent and child outcomes. More>>>

Secondary Transition Resources


Following are new publications and resources related to secondary transition needs of youth with disabilities:

Successful Transition Models for Youth with Mental Health Needs: A Guide for Workforce Professionals published by the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability, written by PACER staff

Think College: Web site developed by The Consortium for Postsecondary Education for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities on college options for people with intellectual disabilities

Roadmaps II: Report by Assistive Technology (AT) Collaborative on enhancing employment of people with disabilities through the use of assistive technology

RTI State Database


The National Center on Response to Intervention has released a new RTI State Database that provides resources developed on topics related to RTI such as policy documents, briefs, and transition modules. The database also describes the state’s framework for using RTI (including specific learning disability eligibility) and information related to State Performance Plans and State Personnel Development Grants. NIMAS State Surveys


The National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) Technical Assistance Center has developed a detailed table with data on the presence of NIMAS information on each State’s Department of Education Web site. Users can quickly access any information developed by their State for districts or families regarding NIMAS. The table is updated monthly. More>>>

The Condition of Education 2009


The Condition of Education 2009 is an annual report published by the National Center for Education Statistics. The 2009 report contains data on over 46 indicators including knowledge and skills of young children, children and youth with disabilities in public schools, and mobility of college students. The Web site contains data from 2000 to the present. More>>>

CSEFEL Infant Toddler Training Modules Now Available in Spanish


The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) recently introduced a new Spanish version of their Promoting Social and Emotional Competence infant/toddler training modules. Both the English and Spanish versions can be downloaded for free.

Multilingual Disability Information


Oregon Health & Science University has assembled links to resources in a variety of languages regarding specific disabilities and developmental conditions. More general links are also provided on topics such as nutrition and mobility aids. More>>>
