New Hampshire's Make a Difference Web Site

The New Hampshire Parent Information Center has collaborated with the New Hampshire Department of Education to sponsor a parental involvement Web site. The partnership between the agencies has led to a resource-rich site promoting family-school-community partnerships. The Web site was developed as part of NH PIC’s Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC) project and includes research-based articles and information about upcoming workshops. Congratulations to executive director Heather Thalheimer and all of NH PIC for this successful collaboration!

Reminder – EDCAPS Outage

The Department of Education will soon be in the process of moving their data processing facilitates. Please remember that EDCAPS operations will be unavailable from November 21-December 1, 2008. This includes cash drawdowns through the G5 system. Please plan accordingly!

Check and Connect Webcast – December 3, 2008

The Exiting Community of Practice in collaboration with the University of Minnesota is presenting a Webcast on the Check & Connect dropout prevention program. Check & Connect is the only intervention recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse as having strong evidence of positive effects for staying in school. The presenters will discuss the components of the program, supporting research, and local implementation considerations.

Early Childhood Inclusion DRAFT Position Statement

The National Professional Development Center on Inclusion (NPDCI) has collaborated with the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to develop a joint position statement on early childhood inclusion. NPDCI would like input on the statement and has developed a short survey to gather feedback.

Mental Health Parity Law

On October 3, 2008 the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (the Wellstone-Domenici Parity Act) was signed into law by President Bush. The law, which will become effective January 1, 2010, will end health insurance inequity between mental health and medical/surgical benefits for group health plans of 50 or more employees. The American Psychological Association has posted a summary of the new law.

Save the Date – National Inclusive Schools Week

The 2008 National Inclusive Schools Week will be celebrated December 1-5 with the theme Together We Learn Better: Inclusive Schools Benefit All Children. Inclusive Schools Week is an annual event that highlights the accomplishments of families, schools, and communities that have dedicated time, labor, and resources to promoting inclusive education for all of the world's children. Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie Focuses on Tourette Syndrome

On December 7, 2008, CBS will air the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Front of the Class. The movie is based on the real-life story of Brad Cohen, a young man with Tourette Syndrome who becomes a gifted teacher.

Children and Clinical Studies

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a new Web site that provides parents and health care providers with insights on children’s medical research. The site includes videos of families talking about their experiences with participating in clinical studies, as well as background information on why medical research is important and the protections that are put in place.

New NCD Rehabilitation Act Report

The National Council on Disability recently released a report titled The Rehabilitation Act: Outcomes for Transition-Age Youth. The report analyzes the Rehabilitation Act’s influence on postsecondary education and employment outcomes of transition-age youth. The report recommends that more research be conducted on vocational rehabilitation transition services to determine what methods of delivery are most effective in assisting youth meet their employment goals.

National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange Online Resources

November 17-21 is International Exchange Week, and the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) has a wide range of information to assist people with disabilities have successful experiences traveling abroad. New resources include an article about using vocational rehabilitation (VR) funds for exchange programs.

Alphabet Kids

Alphabet Kids was written by Robbie Woliver and published in 2008. The book provides information on over 70 “Alphabet” disorders, including symptoms, possible causes, and treatment options. The goal of the book is to help parents and others understand the complexity of comorbid disorders in order to most effectively meet their children’s needs.

The Administration for Children and Families has posted a series of videos on their Web site: Building Blocks for Hispanic Outreach and Service. The videos were designed for Head Start programs, but contain helpful information for anyone working with Hispanic families.
