Wisconsin CPRC Featured in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
A story about the founder of Alianza Latina Aplicando Soluciones (ALAS) recently appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Monica Lopez and her family were named the 2009 Hispanic Family of the Year by United Migrant Opportunity Services, Inc. Lopez started a support group for families that eventually became ALAS because of her own experience raising a child with a disability after moving to Milwaukee from Mexico City. More>>>
Advocates for Children Featured in New Book on Illiteracy
Advocates for Children, a PTI in New York City, is mentioned in Beth Fertig’s new book Why Cant U Teach Me 2 Read?. One of three young people profiled in the book was a student assisted by Advocates for Children. USA Today also published an article on the story. More>>>
Arkansas PTI Employee Receives State Award
Robin Snider, a full-time employee of the Arkansas Parent Training and Information Center and full-time student at Arkansas State University, was recently awarded the Governor Mike and Ginger Beebe Single Parent Scholarship. Snider, the first-ever recipient of this award, is part of ASU’s Communication Disorders program. Congratulations to Robin!

TA&D Center of the Month: PEPNet Regional Centers
PEPNet is a collaborative of four regional centers that work to expand higher education opportunities for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. PEPNet works with secondary education programs, adult basic education programs, colleges, and other educational institutions to help youth transition to advanced learning opportunities. Recently, they produced a DVD on the Americans with Disabilities Act, which can be viewed on their Web site. More>>>
November is American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month
American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month is celebrated each November. Colorín Colorado, a Web site for parents and educators of English Language Learners, has posted a variety of book lists, activities, links and tip sheets in honor of this important celebration. More>>>
Mobility International I-LEAD Exchange Program
Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is currently accepting I-LEAD applications from women and men with and without disabilities who have influence and are in decision making positions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. The Advanced I-LEAD Exchange Program will be designed to expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Latin America by addressing the specific themes and expertise represented by the final accepted delegation. Participants will spend 13 days in the U.S. meeting with various government and advocacy group leaders. Applications are due December 1, 2009. More>>>

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created a new parent portal to help parents find information on raising healthy children and providing a safe home and community. Families can find credible resources on a variety of topics, such as illnesses and diseases, developmental milestones, peer relationships, and nutrition. More>>>
Research Report: Helping Students Navigate the Path to College
The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently published a practice guide with recommendations for educators, administrators, and policymakers to promote student’s enrollment in higher education. Helping Students Navigate the Path to College: What High Schools Can Do describes best practices for hands-on assistance and guidance. More>>>
Introductory Guide for Early Language and Emerging Literacy Instruction
The National Center on Family Literacy published a guide for teachers based on the information presented in the 2008 Developing Early Literacy: Report of the National Early Literacy Panel. The guide takes research presented in that report and provides concrete strategies to help educators, administrators, and parents better support young children’s language and literacy learning. New IRIS Module: Functional Behavior Assessments
The newest training module from the IRIS Center explores the basic principles of behavior and the importance of discovering the reasons that students engage in problem behavior. The steps to conducting a functional behavioral assessment and developing a behavior plan are described. More>>>
Project Forum recently completed an update of their brief policy analysis of the implementation of the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS). NIMAS: State Implementation Update reports the findings of a survey of State NIMAS coordinators including their roles and responsibilities, professional development activities, data collection, and challenges. New GAO Report on Vocational Rehabilitation Funds
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) completed a study on whether the funding formula (last updated in 1978) used to distribute funds to state vocational rehabilitation agencies equitably allocates resources. The report summarizes possible options for revising the formula and recommendations for ensuring there is a smooth transition process. More>>>
